DROPKICK MURPHYS - GOING OUT IN STYLE

Again, similarly as we have done before we watched this music video without the sound to see if we could determine what genre it was.
From the hints of green in the clothes the characters in the video wore we could determine the video might have something to so with ireland. It was clear that it was a party track almost and we thought it may have a grebo aspect too it as well due to the type of people in it. It was clear it was an american video as everyone in the video was good looking which is a common trait.
We then watched it again with the sound, and found that we were right.
It has the classic irish music as the base music but then has a punkish american style of lyrics and music.
People who listen to this type of music will be drawn to watch this video as not only does it include the type of people that the audience will be able to relate to. It also has probably the best looking people from this stereotype which gives the viewer someone to aspire to be like.
There is not one ugly woman throughout the entire video which means its "eye candy" for the male audience and something for the female population to try and be like.
All the males in the video are cool, jumping around having a good time. Again this is just another think the consumer is going to want to be a part of and live themselves.
The songs called GOING OUT IN STYLE. The video is set at a funeral but portrays a crazy party where no one is morning.
This is another thing that the target audience of this song will aspire to have. The fact that although funerals are seen as a dull sad event, they are still making the most of everything and like the name says GOING OUT IN STYLE.

WE DON'T CARE - AUDIO BULLYS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXMUY4deXs0

We watched this video without any sound to see if we could determine who it would appeal to without knowing the genre of the music.
Our first impression was that it was rap because there were "tough", "gangster" men walking around, in England in a rough area. People who like rap are going to aspire to be someone hard and feared in the community which is what this video portrays.

We then watched it again with the music on and discovered that what we thought was correct.
I think this video is stupid because I can't see why a 20 year old man is going to want to aspire to be a small little boy who thinks he's really cool and hard walking round a town and checking out a woman in a bar who is probably triple his age. Although I can see that maybe this could be trying to put across that people who like this sort of music are in fact at heart just small boys who think they're more important than they are, and so if this is the point that its trying make then they've done it well.

SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY
People seek out messages in texts which support and validate there social identity.
Horward extended this in 1997. Selective choices in (especially media) texts where a form of social identity gratification.

CONVENTIONS OF A SHORT FILM

Character:
Within a short film there is usually two or three main characters. This is because there is little time to determine too many relationships or a deep history between too many characters. By keeping it simple it allows the viewer to stay engaged on what the short film offers

Twists:
A short film nearly always contains a minor twist. This is because as they are so short, the story needs something to give it a little depth and actual give a reason for the audience to stay interested. Without it the story would be dull and boring.

Budget:
The budget of a small film is usually quite small. This is because the people that make short films are ofter independent productions and so don't have any funding to spend loads of money on  extravagant  equipment etc. Also, because it is a short film it doesn't tend to cost huge amounts, and because a lot of the time they are quite amateur actors sometimes work for free.

Length:
The fact that its called a "short film" obviously means that the film is going to be short. They usually last between 5-10 minutes. If they lasted any longer then they wouldn't really be considered short and they viewer may being to think the story is dragging a bit.

Situation:
The situation of a short film tends to take place in everyday life. This is so we can relate to it. Another thing short films usually are drawn to do is flip the situation a bit in some way or another. This means not only can the audience put their self in the situation, but it allows them to become intrigued by the story.

YOUNG AND RUBICAM
Young and Rubicam created the theory that there are seven types of people in the world;

  • the explorer - seek discovery
  • the aspirer - seek status
  • the succeeder - seek control
  • the reformer - seek enlightenment
  • the mainstream - seek security
  • the struggler - seek escape
  • the resigned - seek survival

They based there theory on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and from this developed a series of types people can be classed as. This system accepted that they type of person an individual will be is affected by the country your from and cultural backgrounds. From this it got its name, the 4Cs which stands for Cross Cultural Consumer Characterisation

I think that I am the mainstream.
"These are people who live in the world of the domestic and the everyday. A daily routine is fundamental to the way they live their lives. Their life choices are 'we' rather than 'me'.As their name implies, they are the mainstream of society. They are the largest group of people within 4Cs across the world. They respond to big established brands, to 'family' brands and to offers of value for money."

Broken - Bad Religion

I watched this video without the sound to see if I could work out what genre the music was and who would like it just from the video. The song is called broken and one if edits they've done on the video is a broken glass affect on the camera screen. Although I do not like this affect as it made me feel trapped, this lead to me believe that the type this music video was was the struggler as they were looking for escape. Also because its a performance video I thought it was more likely than not a punk or rock genre. AFter watching the video I then watched it again but this time with the music to see if what I thought was correct, which it was.

ANDREW GOODWIN'S THEORIES OF MUSIC VIDEO ANALYSIS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP6XpLQM2Cs TikTok - Ke$ha

1. MUSIC VIDEOS DEMONSTRATE GENRE CHARACTERISTICS
This video is for a pop song. Like the classic pop song it has a cool, good looking girl that any young girl could be impressed by as the main focus. It shows her having fun and doing things that girls in their teens and younger can aspire to be like. She's wearing graphic, sparkly clothing which is popular with her target audience of girls aged 8 to 18. However she is also wearing very little clothing throughout the music video which could have been done as a sex appeal to broaden her audience democratic. Like many other pop music videos it follows a narrative story but also contains an aspect of performance which show show the viewer can not only follow along with the video, but also feel part of the fun thats going on.

2. THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LYRICS AND VISUALS
This song does this almost throughout the entire video. Starting with her in the bath looking a mess; "wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy"
"Before I leave brush my teeth" - she literally does go to brush her teeth.
The camera goes to her toes when she sings about a pedicure.
A lot of the relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is very literal however some of the time it is as though she is taking the mick out of people who actually live like what she is portraying whist still making it seem desirable.

3. THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC AND VISUALS
This video includes a lot of points where the relationship between music and visuals is very strong. For example whenever she is walking around or dancing in the video its in time with the song that the video is for as though she is listening to it the whole time. Also, the music seems to get louder and more intense at points in the video where she is is going crazy dancing in a party where everyones drunk and being wild.

4. THE DEMANDS OF THE RECORD LABEL WILL INCLUDE THE NEED FOR LOTS OF CLOSE UPS OF THE ARTIST AND THE ARTIST MAY DEVELOP MOTIFS WHICH RECUR ACROSS THEIR WORK (A VISUAL STYLE)
Although Ke$ha is not conventionally pretty, she gets more screen time that any other focus in the video. In fact there isn't any other focus apart from Ke$ha. Some boys may think she's hot and girls will think she's cool and want to be like her but the main reason I think the record label has made her the main focus is because she is so controversial.

5. SCREENS WITHIN SCREENS, TELESCOPES, ETC AND PARTICULARLY VOYEURISTIC/EROTIC TREATMENT OF THE FEMALE BODY
Throughout the video Ke$ha is sexualised however in a "chavvy" way. Although she is in trampy dirty clothes, the clothes she is wearing reveal a lot of skin and will appeal to men. Also, the male characters in the video, although the may all be models have been dressed up to look stupid. Even with the icon Mick Jagger, the character that is representing him in the video looks silly and like Ke$ha is making a joke out of him.

6.INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCE

These three famous icons are the most recognisable intertextuality included in the song. And not only this but Ke$ha has portrayed their characteristics within the video. She plays on the fact that she has sunglasses on and how it affects her authority; P Diddy looks so important because of the sunglasses and suit he is wearing.
Also she's managed to channel the "coolness" of Mick Jagger by being almost naked like he is in his picture, and by portraying that she is always having a good time.
Jack Daniels is probably the most well known drink she could have mentioned in the video. And obviously she needed to include some type of drink seeing as she's singing about being drunk for the better part of the song.

The conventions of a pop music video I've mainly based my findings about the conventions of a pop music video on One Directions's What Makes You Beautiful video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJO3ROT-A4E From looking at this video and various others I have found that the type of music videos pop artists produce vary between performance, narrative and content videos. Often when they are content videos they are just having fun in front of the camera and almost nearly include an aspect of performance and narrative. This is so that it makes like they are really having fun, you have something to follow along with, but also really aspire to be like them and wish you were a part of it. Other times when they are narrative it often revolves around a love story because this is the usual content pop songs are about. They have really pretty girls and good looking guys and make you wish you could be a part of the story. In a pop music performance video they do not usual include actual clips from concerts they've done which other genres generally do. They usually just have the band in the background with a crazy lighting system or keep it simple and play out to the camera and make it look like they are really enjoying themselves. Generally a pop music video plays upon a boy and a girl liking each other nada flirting and they often have a humour aspect as well.

What is the purpose of a music video?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRaWnd3LJfs
PAYPHONE - MAROON 5 FEAT. WIZ KHALIFA

I am unsure if I really like this music video or not. I think if I didn't like the song as much as I do then I wouldn't even both watching it.
The video almost has no resemblance to the song at all apart from the fact that Adam Levine starts and finishes the video in a payphone and the songs called payphone.
The video is a content video and so if you didn't know the song then you would strongly believe that it belonged to a movie soundtrack.

There aren't very many generic elements to this video either. Although it does have a basic love story that isn't the main focus of the video and it almost takes on the role of a crime drama, as it includes so much digetic sound which almost makes me think that the video is aimed to please the male demographic.

I found it hard to determine whether the video is secondary or primary to the music/artist in relation to sales. Some may argue that because it is a content video you are only drawn to watch the video because you want to see what the outcome of it is. However both Maroon 5 n=and Wiz Khalifa are both huge artists and you could say that no matter what the video is like, there fans are going to watch it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPVI6fE3aeo&feature=youtube_gdata_player Kickstarts by Example. This video is one of my favourites as I really like the use of split screen and in music videos I prefere when the artist mimes along to the words of the song and whatbis happening in the video corresponds with what the song talks about. This video has all these qualities. I also like that the music video doesn't include a lot of computerise content as is based on real life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqGrzCzHEWM&feature=youtube_gdata_player Last Friday Night by Katy Perry. The main reason I like this video is because of the humour it contains. I like that it tells a story which makes it interesting to watch and keeps the audience entertained. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKwBgRLwSXA&feature=youtube_gdata_player Airplanes by B.O.B feat. Hayley Williams. Right at the start of this video a technique is used where the silhouette of the artist is all that can be seen. I really like this opening and think it is a good effect. I also like thebuse of contrasting scene changes and the fact that for the most part of the video the artist mimes along to the song.
