TODOROV'S NARRATIVE THEORY
Todorov's theory was that all narratives begin in equilibrium or status quo where any potentially opposing forces are in balance. This is disrupted by an event which then sets off a chain of events. Problems are solved so that order can be restored back to a equilibrium.
He said that conventional narratives have five stages:

  1. A state of equilibrium at the outset
  2. A disruption of the equilibrium by some action
  3. A recognition that there has been a disruption
  4. An attempt to repair the disruption
  5. A reinstatement of the equilibrium
This structure can be seen and applied to many mainstream film narratives.

ACTION CODE - what they see, they can work out whats going on in the plot
ENIGMA CODE - where you have to work out whats going on in the plot, not sure and it isn't clear
SYMBOLIC CODE -, throuhg symbols they work it out
