CONVENTIONS

COUNTRY MUSIC:
Country music has been around since the 1920's where it originated in the USA. The term country music gained popularity in the 1940s but prior to this was called hillbilly music, and nowadays the term country music is used to describe many genre and sub-genres of music. In 2009 country music was the most listened to rush hour radio genre during evening commutes to word and the second most popular in the morning.
Like all music genres, country music has merged and collaborated with other genres such as pop and indie music to create more sub-genres of the music. The most popular sub-genre of country music I would say is country pop music which has artists like Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood in it, however these artists to stick to their country roots. This sub-genres is the one my music video will take.
Country pop (or soft pop) emerged in the 1970s.

  • Tend to have a strong narrative aspect
  • Set in very stereotypical areas such as rural areas
  • Mise-en-scen tends to be just in modern day or in a previous time, for example victorian
  • The artist usually features within the video
Although if you google the artist I want to do, Carrie Underwood, it will say she is of a country genres, I disagree to an extent. I feel more that she is of a pop music genre with an influence of country, especially in the song that I want to do. Therefore when looking at my target audience I will be focusing more on a pop culture demographic who are also a fan of pop country music.
